To pre-wash or not to pre-wash...

Remember my Look and Learn quilt? I made it to give to a friend who recently had a baby. After hand sewing the binding, I threw it in the wash and THE RED FABRICS RAN!!! I don't know what happened. I've used this charm pack before and never had a problem. I think I've made approximately 80 quilts and this is only the second time that it's happened to me. The last time it happened was when I made this quilt and while it did bleed a little, it was very faint. I'm not a big pre-washer but I may have to rethink this... at least the red fabrics. I hadn't thrown it in the dryer so I washed it again. It just made it worse... more of the red bled on the cream. I found this at the grocery store and thought I'd give it a try. The directions called for you to dissolve 3 packs in hot water. There's only one pack in the box so that's all I used. I was really nervous because I rarely wash in hot water and I didn't know if I was just going to create a bigger mess. By the way, holy heck, this stuff reeks!!
This is the result.... I now have a quilt in different shades of yellow and a little bit of brown. There are no reds, oranges, greens or blue. However, I really like the way it looks ( you might want to click on the picture to get a closer look).

The problem is this is what the back looked like before.

Now it looks like this.... I'm not sure what color to call this. Lets just say my quilt is now VERY vintage looking. I'm not sure what I'll do with it now. So sad :( All those prairie points.... My poor burned fingers ...

Speaking of burned fingers.... I hate cleaning my iron! I've tried multiple methods...this,
and this...and this...I even bought this... it was all a big pain.

I found a way to clean my iron in two minutes. Oh Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, how I love thee!!!! Seriously, two minutes!!!! And the iron doesn't need to be on so no burned fingers!!! I don't know why I never thought of it before. That Magic eraser works for EVERYTHING!!

See... nice, shiny, clean iron. Ahhh, at least SOMETHING in my life is working right...

  1. wow i am completely confused by what happened to your quilt! it looks like two completely different quilts!!!! they both look great, and i like both colorways....even though i know it was not intentional. I think you should still give it to your friend! Unless she is a quilter she will never know the difference. and even if she is a quilter I am sure she will laugh and appreciate the situation.

I personally dont prewash my quilting fabrics, but I do prewash the fabrics I will be using for garment sewing.

thanks for the tip on using a magic eraser. i use them on everything but i never would have thought an iron! im gonna have to give it a try.

  2. oh, i feel so bad for you and your quilt! the thing about charm packs is that i wouldn't even think of pre-washing them. yardage i might, but not charms. i agree, your quilt does have a nice vintage look, but how frustrating to have to go through all that hassle.

  3. I agree with you - you should probably still give it to your friend - she'll appreciate the effort that went into it. :)

  4. A really easy way to figure out if you need to worry about a red: fill a cup ( I like a white plastic one so I can see) with hot water, and drop a small piece of fabric into it. If it turns pink, then it'll run. I bought some red linen on clearance and decided not to use it in a quilt specifically because of this.
Also, since the American Jane fabric is so vintage to begin with, your new colour scheme works!

  5. Wow- was tht drastic or what! I wonder if it was more the product than the hot water. But what do I know. :) Thanks for the tip on the iron. I will have to try it!

  7. O.M.G. I CANNOT beleive what happened to your poor quilt with that color eraser! It never occurred to me it would erase all the colors in the quilt. I would have died! You're taking it very well.

  8. I would be very upset to see the colors ran. Did you pre-wash your fabrics? Looks like you made the best out of the situation! It is a gorgeous quilt.

  9. Chen, I still think it looks really neat! Different than the original, but I like it. I'm a fan of yellows and browns and neutrals.I actually like the turnout. So I'd still give it as the gift. So much work and I'm sure your friend will still really love it!

  10. You poor thing, the one consolation must be that your quilt looks fine still.
I have to start washing my quilts soon and am getting a little nervous now!!

  13. I usually prewash, but prewashing charms would be a disaster! Trick I learned and has kept me safe so far: add salt (a lot, like 1/2 cup) to the wash with your quilt & detergent. I've heard vinegar works too, but haven't tried it.
The faded quilt is lovely too though!

  14. Hi, I use a product called "Carbona Dye Grabber" that you can get at Joann's and Hancock's. You put in the washer when you wash your quilt for the first time and it is suppose to soak up all the floating dyes in the water, it is good for 30 washings. I have washed 3 quilts so far and it has worked good. You can't put it in the dryer and I have bought 2 so far because somehow the hubbie keeps sticking it in the dryer. Good Luck!!!
